Taking the Right Lane - Part II |
|
Written by Kirk Alfaro on Monday, 06 April 2009
The last time we spoke to Mark Lane it was August of 2008 and he had just accepted an assistant coaching job at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Hamilton-native was excited but being newly
appointed he couldn't tell us much about the team at the time as he wasn't familiar
with the talent. Eight months later, Mark Lane and his Cape Fear
Sea Devils are fresh off from playing in the 16-team national junior college championship
in Hutchinson, Kansas for the first time in the school's history. Seeded 5th in
their district tournament in which the champion gets a ticket to nationals, Cape
Fear (20-12) upset 3 teams seeded higher capped off by knocking out Clinton Junior
College 74-70 in the final to win the Region X championship title.
For Head Coach Ryan Mantlo, although the team took time to
gel on the court, he was very impressed by his Canadian assistant and what he
brought to the table from the get-go. "I felt like coming into the season
we had enough talent to win the conference championship, it was a matter of
all the talent buying into one system and trusting one another", said the
2nd-year sideline boss. "This team took a long time to fully buy-in but
once they did everything fell into place. Mark was a huge asset
to our program throughout the season. He stepped in and hit the ground running
from day 1. From individual workouts to team travel, Mark was
great. He demands excellence from himself and you can see that rubbing off on
our players."

How were you feeling after the district championship game? |
| |
|
| Lane: |
It was a great feeling a feeling you can't really explain. Cutting down
the net was a moment I will never forget in my coaching career. That is
why you coach the game. |
| |
|
| TheHoopla: |
Did you expect this at the beginning of the season? |
| |
|
| Lane: |
I was 50/50 when I first saw the players. I hadn't seen any of the other
teams so I really didn't know what to expect. I didn't think I would be
winning a conference championship and going to the National Tournament my
first year. |

|
| TheHoopla: |
You upset three teams, what do you think made the team play so spectacularly? |
| |
|
| Lane: |
We didn't really upset anyone, the conference was so tight all year. Any
team could of beaten anyone on any given day...We just came together as
a unit at the right time, the guys worked extremely hard. |

| TheHoopla: |
Describe your season from how you were at the beginning of the season
to how you were at the end. |
| |
|
| Lane: |
At the beginning of the season I knew we had the talent to go far, but
our inconsistency throughout the year scared me. Half way through the year
I said to coach "I really think we have the chance to do something
special this year" We all just got focused and continued to work hard
as a unit and prevailed. It definiltey ended up being a special year for
Cape Fear Basketball and for me as a coach...the future is bright. |

| TheHoopla: |
How much have you been learning under the guidance of Ryan Mantlo? |
| |
|
| Lane: |
I have learned a lot from Coach Mantlo. He does a great job motivating
the guys and always got the best out of them. I have a great deal of respect
for him with what he did with the team this year. |
| |
|
| TheHoopla: |
Are you proactive in recruiting Canadian kids to your program? Can players
get in touch with you? |
| |
|
| Lane: |
Cape Fear does not allow international kids so that hurts recruiting for
me because I would love to bring some canadian talent down here. Kids can
always contact me. With all the contacts I have gained being out here I
would do anything I can to help them out. |
| |
|
| TheHoopla: |
Will you be returning to Cape Fear next season? |
| |
|
| Lane: |
Absolultley I will be back to win another Championship. Coach Mantlo and
the athletic staff have made this a home away from home for me. We are going
to have a better next year and have a legit shot to win a National Championship.
