Written by Kirk Alfaro on Sunday, 10 August 2008

In the Steel City, longtime Head Coach Theresa Burns of the McMaster women's program has taken a leave of absence for the 2008-09 season. Anne Marie Thuss has been named the interim Head Coach. Thuss has been a Mac assistant coach since 2001 and along with Burns was instrumental in building the OUA's most successful women's basketball program over the past decade winning three OUA Championships and five OUA West Division titles. In 2008, the Lady Marauders won the OUA Conference Championship, the OUA West Division titles and a CIS Bronze Medal which is the best result the program has experienced since the 1989-90 season.

Over in our nation's capital, the Ottawa Gee-Gees women's basketball program named Ottawa native and legend, Andy Sparks as their new head coach. Sparks spent the last 20 years as a teacher, administrator and head coach at Ashbury College H.S. in Ottawa. As coach, Sparks won 15 city and 3 Ontario provincial championships. He was also an assistant with the 2004-05 CIS championship men's team and 2003-04 women's team at Carleton. Sparks replaces Carlos Brown and his main priority will be looking to improve the program's 3-19 overall record last season in the OUA East.
