Written by Kirk Alfaro on Monday, 24 October 2011 Kitchener, Ontario-native Imad Qahwash has recently signed a pro contract with the Russian Super League’s Spartak Vidnoye Moscowskaya Oblast basketball club. The 6’3” PG turned down pro offers from various clubs in England and from Jordan’s Zain Basketball Club to sign with the Russian team which coveted his basketball skills, “They scouted me.”, said Qahwash. “They wanted a point guard with overseas experience, national team experience. My experience with the Jordan national team helped me alot especially playing well against those european national teams this (past) summer.” The former D1 Central Arkansas PG will be playing on a team that is based out of the Russian capital of Moscow. Qahwash’s contract includes many perks and incentives some of which include a vehicle and living expenses. “When I was offered the contract, it kind of took a few minutes to settle in,” said the former Grand River H.S. star. “My parents were the first people I told and they are very proud. I was in tears because it is the exact contract I wanted for my rookie year. It was tough to be patient and was definitely a process but in the end it all paid off. My whole family has been very supportive of me since I picked up a basketball but always stressed academics first. I am fortunate enough to have a great family behind me and want to thank them.” Qahwash, who has been in Windsor working out with basketball personal trainer Jaime Stewart (ETBA Basketball Training), leaves for Moscow and his new team November 4th. Spartak currently sits 7th in Super League standings but has just come off a big win against 2nd place Universitet-Yugra Surgut.
